Increasing the efficiency of the hull is critical in minimizing the amount of energy required to move a boat through the water. Recreational craft manufacturers have begun using computational fluid dynamics which is a complex computer model for analyzing and optimizing water flow around the hull.  
 
Small changes to the hull shape can dramatically influence its efficiency. Moreover, foiling technologies enable significant gains in efficiency at cruising speeds, reducing the hydrodynamic loss from the hull’s contact with the water.
